The Story In One Paragraph
In late 2025 Amazon MGM greenlit a new Stargate series from franchise veteran Martin Gero, then cancelled it in June 2026 — before a single frame was filmed, after a finished 20-week writers’ room and UK pre-production — citing fears it "would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase." The facts cut against that reasoning: SG-1 still charts in France nineteen years on, Amazon’s own hit Fallout proved a dedicated fanbase can top the charts, and a season would cost under one percent of Amazon’s content budget. The show’s own creators publicly dispute the decision, and a fan campaign — over 62,000 petition signatures and growing — is asking Amazon to revive it.
Why It’s A Story
- A greenlit, fully-staffed series killed before filming, amid a studio leadership change — not a ratings flop.
- It fits a wider, documented pattern of studios shelving finished or in-demand work, from Batgirl to Coyote vs. Acme.
- The "broad appeal" reasoning is contradicted by the studio’s own data and its own recent hits.
- A fast-growing, organized and on-the-record fan response.
